Masa depan pangan dunia menghadapi tantangan yang semakin kompleks, mulai dari perubahan iklim, berkurangnya lahan subur, hingga meningkatnya kebutuhan pangan akibat pertumbuhan populasi. Di tengah tantangan tersebut, lahan basah hadir sebagai harapan baru. Dengan luas mencapai jutaan hektar di Indonesia, lahan basah menyimpan potensi luar biasa untuk mendukung ketahanan pangan sekaligus menjaga keseimbangan ekosistem.Buku ini hadir untuk mengupas praktik-praktik pertanian berkelanjutan yang dilakukan di lahan basah, termasuk rawa dan gambut, sebagai solusi inovatif dalam mendukung ketahanan pangan nasional. Melalui kisah-kisah inspiratif dari petani lokal, buku ini tidak hanya memberikan panduan praktis, tetapi juga membuka wawasan tentang pentingnya lahan basah bagi masa depan pangan dan keberlanjutan lingkungan.

The study explores the role of social capital in promoting social sustainability within small-scale coconut plantations in Indragiri Hilir, Indonesia. Employing a qualitative approach, this preliminary research engaged 65 farmers and 15 middlemen through extensive in-depth interviews and group discussions. Spanning diverse rural landscapes across the coastal areas of Indragiri Hilir—including Pulau Burung, Kateman, Tanah Merah, Teluk Belengkong, Pelangiran, Tembilahan, Enok, Sungai Batang, and Reteh Districts, covering 15 villages—the study addresses specific challenges and opportunities for sustainable practices unique to each locality. Through a nuanced examination of bonding, bridging, and linking forms of social capital, the findings underscore the pivotal role of social capital in fostering social sustainability.This encompasses aspects such as agricultural finance, supply chain dynamics, agricultural regeneration, and sustainable land management, facilitated by knowledge exchange, resource sharing, and collective action. The research highlights that the relationships among farmers, characterized as “bonding social capital,” constitute the fundamental basis for coconut ecosystem sustainability. However, addressing more complex challenges and meeting advanced needs requires expanding relationships beyond homogeneous groups of farmers. Coconut-based Agroforestry-Paludiculture to Improve Peatlands Sustainability and Food Security-id

Peatlands, which cover approximately 7% of Indonesia&#8217;s land surface, hold significant agricultural potential but require careful management for sustainability. The objective of this research is to assess the effects of land and water management on peat soil bulk density (BD) and subsidence in agricultural practices employing integrated water management. The study was conducted in Pulau Burung District, Riau Province, which is the only Nucleus and Smallholder Estate Scheme of coconut plantation in Indonesia. The plantation applied and managed an integrated water management technique called &#8220;Water Management Trinity&#8221; to regulate water levels during rainy and dry spells, ensuring optimal growth conditions and maintaining peat soil wetness.

Effects of Land and Water Management on Bulk Density of Peat Soils in Coconut Plantations-id

This study investigates the dynamics of nutrient cycling within closed-system peatland ecosystems, focusing on the role of nutrient leaching in enhancing biomass productivity. Conducted in a coconut plantation in Pulau Burung District, Indragiri Hilir Regency, Riau Province, the research quantitatively assesses the leaching of essential nutrients into a 10 cm layer of peat soil resulting from cover crop decomposition. These cover crops, integral to the plantation&#8217;s organic coconut production strategy, are managed through periodic cutting (every four months) and natural decomposition on the field.

Nutrient leaching analysis in cover crop management to enhance the nutrient cycling process in coconut plantations-id

Indonesia, progressing towards sustainable development, faces the complex task of transitioning to low-carbon agriculture in peatlands, an essential part of broader sustainable objectives. Under the Paris Agreement, it targets a conditional 41% emission reduction, focusing on minimizing emissions from peat decomposition and fires within agricultural practices in peatlands. This paper explores the complexities and progress of low-carbon agriculture in peatlands, underscoring its significance in the larger sustainable development agenda. Our study reveals that current strategies to reduce carbon emissions in peatlands aim at restoring their natural waterlogged conditions.

Integrated water management practice in tropical peatland agriculture has low carbon emissions and subsidence rates-id

Ketahanan pangan berarti ketersediaan pangan yang cukup, aman, bergizi, terjangkau, dan berkelanjutan bagi semua orang, kapan pun dan di mana pun. Namun sepanjang tahun 2023, sistem pangan global menghadapi serangkaian gejolak. Mulai dari kekeringan berkepanjangan di Amerika yang menyebabkan  pasokan kedelai ke Indonesia turun drastis, El-Nino yang merusak pertanian padi di Asia&#8211;diikuti dengan larangan ekspor beras di India, wabah Fall Armyworm di Afrika yang merusak ladang jagung, dan Eropa yang mengeluarkan Common Agriculture Practice (CAP) yang memicu proteksionisme pangan.
Tantangan-tantangan ini semakin memperburuk krisis pangan yang telah lama terjadi di dunia. Di tengah situasi ini, Tay Juhana Foundation berupaya memperkuat sistem pangan lokal, khususnya di Riau, agar masyarakat lebih resilien terhadap berbagai gejolak yang terjadi di level internasional.
