Peatlands, which cover approximately 7% of Indonesia’s land surface, hold significant agricultural potential but require careful management for sustainability. The objective of this research is to assess the effects of land and water management on peat soil bulk density (BD) and subsidence in agricultural practices employing integrated water management. The study was conducted in Pulau Burung District, Riau Province, which is the only Nucleus and Smallholder Estate Scheme of coconut plantation in Indonesia. Effects of Land and Water Management on Bulk Density of Peat Soils in Coconut Plantations-id

This study investigates the dynamics of nutrient cycling within closed-system peatland ecosystems, focusing on the role of nutrient leaching in enhancing biomass productivity. Conducted in a coconut plantation in Pulau Burung District, Indragiri Hilir Regency, Riau Province, the research quantitatively assesses the leaching of essential nutrients into a 10 cm layer of peat soil resulting from cover crop decomposition. Indonesia, progressing towards sustainable development, faces the complex task of transitioning to low-carbon agriculture in peatlands, an essential part of broader sustainable objectives. Under the Paris Agreement, it targets a conditional 41% emission reduction, focusing on minimizing emissions from peat decomposition and fires within agricultural practices in peatlands. This paper explores the complexities and progress of low-carbon agriculture in peatlands, underscoring its significance in the larger sustainable development agenda. Ketahanan pangan berarti ketersediaan pangan yang cukup, aman, bergizi, terjangkau, dan berkelanjutan bagi semua orang, kapan pun dan di mana pun. Namun sepanjang tahun 2023, sistem pangan global menghadapi serangkaian gejolak. Mulai dari kekeringan berkepanjangan di Amerika yang menyebabkan  pasokan kedelai ke Indonesia turun drastis, El-Nino yang merusak pertanian padi di Asia–diikuti dengan larangan ekspor beras di India, wabah Fall Armyworm di Afrika yang merusak ladang jagung, dan Eropa yang mengeluarkan Common Agriculture Practice (CAP) yang memicu proteksionisme pangan.Tantangan-tantangan ini semakin memperburuk krisis pangan yang telah lama terjadi di dunia. Di tengah situasi ini, Tay Juhana Foundation berupaya memperkuat sistem pangan lokal, khususnya di Riau, agar masyarakat lebih resilien terhadap berbagai gejolak yang terjadi di level internasional.Kami berharap majalah ini dapat menjadi referensi yang bermanfaat bagi para pemangku kepentingan dalam upaya menjaga ketahanan pangan saat ini dan di masa depan.

Historically, El-Nino has decreased rice production in Indonesia due to its effect on precipitation patterns. The current El-Nino event is estimated to get stronger, with a greater than 95% chance through January-March 2024.The government, coordinated by the Ministry of Agriculture, has commenced strategies to anticipate the negative impact, including mapping the El-Nino affected area, disseminating information on adaptive measures, and increasing the availability of climate-resistant seeds, fertilizer, water infrastructure, and machinery.Learning from the implementation gaps, a more substantial focus to secure agricultural productivity during El-Nino event would be on improving the capacity of farmers and agricultural stakeholders.

“Food prices can make the difference between life and death for millions of people around the world” – Maximo Torero Cullon, FAO Chief Economist (Edward, 2022).The massive emergence of pests, fertilizer supply instability, and fluctuations in fertilizer prices show how climate change and international conflict add to the food system’s disruption, which can potentially cause a food crisis.  Apart from having a bad effect on the broader community, the food crisis has also brought misery to Indonesian farmers because it can reduce the quality of their livelihood.

The circumstance of suboptimal land, due to its complex and often difficult nature, is either underutilized and becomes abandoned space or over-utilized and generates environmental problems.
