Sunday, October 16th, 2022 – Tay Juhana Foundation (TJF) held the final event of #tellyoutstory 2.0, “Take Your Action, Be Our Hero,” an annual event organized by TJF to commemorate World Food Day on Sunday, 16th of October 2022. With the theme of “Secure Our Food from Crisis,” this event aimed to invite Indonesian youth to share their stories about the food crisis through audiovisual forms. This year, we had our friend as a collaborator,  Niskala Studio, supported by Yayasan Emas Hitam Indonesia, Pongo Ranger Community, ISEC Indonesia, and AIESEC in Hasanuddin University.

The event was opened with remarks from Prema Ananda, a Co-Founder of Niskala Studio. Prema congratulated all the finalists and believed this event could give more knowledge and experience to the participants in campaigning the food issues through audiovisuals.

The event then continued with the screening of the documentary film “Sumber Makmur” and a short talk show with the movie’s director and cinematographer, Medy Mahasena. This 17:38 minute-long documentary film told the story of urban farming carried out by Banjar residents in the suburbs of Denpasar since March 2020. The pandemic has impacted nearly all aspects and areas, including food sources in Banjar. Still, they took action to turn the abandoned land into an organic vegetable garden.

The film, set in Denpasar, Bali, took 3-6 months to complete. Medy shared his story in the process of making the film that could not be separated from several obstacles such as weather and other things that happened unexpectedly. For Medy, working on this film was a memorable experience. Medy Mahasena added that the documentary “Sumber Makmur” wanted to convey that we, as an urban society, can safeguard our food security with small and simple steps. He hoped this documentary could inspire people to build many other simple movements to maintain food security.

The talk show was also filled with an interactive session with the participants. Participants delivered their views and messages captured through the documentary and shared their experiences in making campaign videos. In this session, Medy shared various tips related to technical matters in making a documentary film with participants. Medy believed that all the knowledge from this Event could be helpful for the participants and the movement of campaigning against the food crisis would continue even after the event ended.

The event then closed with the announcement of the Tell Your Story video competition’s 1st & 2nd place winners; they were Shafa Fakhira in first place and Aslin Ovita D in second place. TJF also provided a favorite winner, who will be announced a week afterwards.
