Economic Researcher

Job Description

ABOUT US

In a world where over seven billion people live, nearly one billion go hungry every night. Access to food, a fundamental human right, is frequently neglected. With challenges like climate change, water scarcity, and complex land management, the urgency for food security has never been greater. The Tay Juhana Foundation (TJF) is dedicated to tackling these issues. Our team of committed professionals is focused on advancing sustainable agricultural practices across the suboptimal lands that constitute two-thirds of Indonesia's surface area. This suboptimal land, integral to local agricultural traditions, holds untapped potential for food production.

Suboptimal land, which includes areas with poor soil, limited water, or extreme weather, can be challenging for food production. However, sustainable agricultural practices offer a way to use these lands effectively for future food needs. Our communication efforts focus on raising awareness and inspiring action by showcasing how sustainability-driven approaches can turn suboptimal land into a key solution for global food challenges.

We are seeking an experienced Economic Researcher to join our team. In this position, you will lead the economic analysis of farmers’ livelihoods and agroforestry systems in Indragiri Hilir, focusing on how economic opportunities and constraints shape the transition toward sustainable land use in suboptimal areas. This study on the economic dimension of agroforestry-based livelihoods is part of an integrated research initiative on food and sustainability, which is currently a key priority for the Tay Juhana Foundation. Join us in building a future where nutritious and sustainable food is accessible to all.

ROLE DESCRIPTION

The Economic Researcher will lead the economic component of TJF’s research on agroforestry development and farmer livelihood systems in Indragiri Hilir. The project examines how agroforestry can strengthen food security and economic sustainability in suboptimal land contexts. The researcher will be responsible for analysing, modelling, and forecasting the economic feasibility of agroforestry-based livelihoods—combining field-based economic data collection with business and market analysis. The position requires both quantitative economic expertise and contextual understanding of rural livelihoods and environmental challenges.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Design and conduct field-based economic studies to understand household income structures, cost-benefit patterns, and market linkages in agroforestry systems.

  2. Employ relevant economic valuation and modelling methods, including: a) Cost–Benefit Analysis (CBA) and Net Present Value (NPV) modelling for different agroforestry options, b) Enterprise or value chain analysis to evaluate production-to-market linkages, c) Contingent Valuation Method (CVM) or Choice Experiment (CE) for assessing farmers’ Willingness to Pay (WTP) for improved inputs, environmental services, or agroforestry interventions, and d) Sensitivity and scenario analysis to test different livelihood and market conditions.

  3. Publish your findings in peer-reviewed scientific journals and contribute to TJF’s outreach efforts, such as writing reports, creating policy briefs, or leading workshops for farmers.

  4. Present at relevant conferences, seminars, and scientific forums to communicate research findings and stay updated on the latest developments in the field.

  5. Collaborate with research institutions, universities, and relevant government bodies to align findings with current policies and scientific advancements.

Minimum Qualification
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Economics, Agronomy, Sociology, Development Studies, Statistics, or related disciplines.

  • Minimum 2 years of work experience in rural livelihood research, agroforestry, or economic analysis.

  • Proven track record in conducting scientific research, with at least one publication in a peer-reviewed journal or equivalent outlet.
