The Tay Juhana Foundation (TJF) is dedicated to tackling these issues. Our team of committed professionals is focused on advancing sustainable agricultural practices across the suboptimal lands that constitute two-thirds of Indonesia's surface area. This suboptimal land, integral to local agricultural traditions, holds untapped potential for food production.

Suboptimal land, which includes areas with poor soil, limited water, or extreme weather, can be challenging for food production. However, sustainable agricultural practices offer a way to use these lands effectively for future food needs. Our communication efforts focus on raising awareness and inspiring action by showcasing how sustainability-driven approaches can turn suboptimal land into a key solution for global food challenges.

We are seeking an experienced Social Researcher to join our team. In this position, you will be responsible for conducting research related to socio-cultural issues, especially understanding local knowledge and traditional ecological practices within suboptimal agricultural contexts. This position is part of an integrated study on food and sustainable agriculture, which is currently a key research priority for the Tay Juhana Foundation. ROLE DESCRIPTION

This position is responsible for researching and documenting traditional ecological knowledge (TEK) and local agricultural practices in suboptimal landscapes, including peatlands, tidal lands, and swamplands. The research will take place primarily in Indragiri Hilir, Riau, and will employ ethnographic and participatory approaches. The Social Researcher will identify local challenges, livelihood dynamics, and community-led initiatives that inform pathways toward sustainable and resilient agriculture.

RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Conduct desk studies and ethnography-based fieldwork to understand local ecological knowledge and socio-cultural dimensions of agriculture on suboptimal lands.

2. Publish your findings in peer-reviewed scientific journals and contribute to TJF’s outreach efforts, such as writing reports, creating policy briefs, or leading workshops for farmers.

3. Present at relevant conferences, seminars, and scientific forums to communicate research findings and stay updated on the latest developments in the field.

4. Collaborate with research institutions, universities, and relevant government bodies to align findings with current policies and scientific advancements.

1. A bachelor's degree in social sciences (anthropology, sociology, development studies) or a master's degree in a relevant field.

2. Minimum 2 years of work experience in a role connected to the responsibilities outlined above.

3. Proven track record in conducting scientific research, with at least one publication in a peer-reviewed journal or equivalent outlet.

ORGANIZATIONAL CONDITIONS

1. This position is permanently based in Jakarta, Indonesia.

2. The position requires regular visits and stays as part of data collection, as well as overseeing ongoing field research in Indragiri Hilir Regency, Riau Province.

   • Office Location: Pluit, North Jakarta (Hybrid working arrangement).

1. Strong ability to conduct rigorous ethnographic research with two or more years' experience, especially within agricultural settings. Knowledge and experience with quantitative methods, participatory mapping, or GIS is advantageous.

2. Demonstrated experience or exposure to food and agricultural issues, particularly in the context of local knowledge.

3. Proven track record in conducting scientific research, with at least one publication in a peer-reviewed journal or equivalent outlet.

4. Self-driven, with the ability to manage multiple tasks, work independently, and meet deadlines with minimum supervision.

5. Existing professional network within universities, research institutions, or NGOs working on agriculture, environment, or food systems.

6. Sensitivity to socio-cultural and environmental contexts, especially in working with local farming communities.

7. Proactive, self-motivated, and detail-orientated.
