Catastrophic forest and land fires have turned a global spotlight on tropical peatlands in Indonesia. The consequent reformulation of Indonesian land-use policy has been complicated by the existence of two apparently opposing objectives, namely conservation and development. In many regions of the country, peatland agriculture is one of the pillars of development, but its sustainability is questioned.This article focuses on a coconut plantation managed by local stakeholders on peatland in Pulau Burung District (Riau Province) where excellent productivity has been achieved, promoting Indonesia as the world’s largest supplier of coconut. The potential role of coconut in improving the sustainability of agriculture on tropical peatland: A case study of 32 years’ practice in Pulau Burung District

In Demak Regency, abrasion and robs flood have adversely affected the farmers’ aquaculture ponds since the past decades. The changing coastal environment and lack of knowledge to adapt in aquaculture management led to declining production that hampered the community’s resilience in the future. To help the farmers to thrive, an initiative called Coastal Field School (CFS) was implemented in 10 villages in Demak.This paper discusses the CFS impact on the farmers’ knowledge change using the indicators of farmers’ program participation level, pre-test and post-test result to determine the knowledge improvement, aquaculture management technique, and productivity rate.This article is published in IOP Conf. Empowering Fish-Farmer through Coastal Field School: Towards Sustainable Aquaculture Practice

Contrary to popular belief that perceived Indonesia has abundance of arable land, the soil types in this country are, in fact, dominated by suboptimal lands. In fact, these lands, including wetlands, can become an alternative to support food production and community welfare.Indonesia with its abundance of suboptimal land resources has been struggling to implement sustainable agriculture on inland swamps. If wetlands could be optimally developed, the nation’s target in producing 10 million tons of rice surplus would be achieved. This also can create five million new jobs for farmers.

Likewise in 1997 and 2015, the year of 2019 so far is relatively dry with the observed influence of weak El-Nino and positive Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD). The combination of these two phenomena results in low rainfall rate and even move the onset of wet season further.A number of studies have discussed the link between active El-Nino, positive IOD, and fire intensity in Indonesia. Intensive and prolonged fire season indeed occurs during El-Nino years, this includes the events of 1997 and 2015. The fire season is at least twice as intensive when the IOD is positive than when it is negative. In 1997, El Nino phase was stronger compared to 2015 where the temperature anomalies were twice higher. The meteorological agencies of Indonesia and Australia have reported that El-Nino influence has weakened in September 2019 while the positive IOD is likely to persist until December.In short, El-Nino phase and positive IOD result in less precipitation that should have naturally diminished forest and land fire.

Kompleksitas dan kondisi alamiah lahan suboptimal membuatnya seringkali kurang dimanfaatkan dan ditinggalkan sebagai lahan tidur ataupun dieksploitasi hingga menimbulkan masalah lingkungan. Padahal, lahan suboptimal bisa menjadi jawaban terhadap tantangan kompetisi konversi lahan untuk pertanian dan non pertanian—terlebih saat populasi global diperkirakan akan mencapai 10 miliar di tahun 2050.

According to the Agricultural Census of Indonesia in 2013, there was only 4% (less than 3.5 million) youth aged 15-35 working as a farmer. This low number is perceived as one of the threats to the nations’ state of food security.
