Strengthening TJF’s Peatland Coconut Ecosystem Research at TropAg 2025

Brisbane, Queensland, Australia – From 11th to 13th November 2025, Tay Juhana Foundation (TJF)'s researcher, Ratu Nabillah, took part in the University of Queensland’s TropAg 2025 International Agricultural Conference. Under this year’s theme, “Addressing Global Challenges,” the conference sought to bring attention to the global challenges affecting the agriculture and food production industry, while also fostering dialogue on sustainable agriculture among other key topics.

During this key opportunity, our researcher presented a research, titled Connecting the Complexities of the Coconut Agriculture Ecosystem on Peatland in Indragiri Hilir, Indonesia: A Systems Thinking Approach,” and joined eight symposia and nine plenary sessions alongside more than 500 participants from 40 countries. The featured study adopts a systems thinking approach, using in-depth interviews, small-scale FGDs, and Group Model Building (GMB), to map key factors of complexity that shape the peatland-based coconut ecosystem. Involving various community actors as informants, the research identified nine interlinked problems that contribute to the vulnerability of Indragiri Hilir’s coconut ecosystem. As this work has not yet been scientifically published, the TropAg Conference served as an invaluable forum for scientific feedback. Insights gathered during the event will be incorporated into the next stage of model refinement and manuscript development.

Beyond sharing research findings and actively participating in the event, the TJF team also engaged in meaningful conversations with Food System Transformation experts from the University of Queensland. These exchanges are valuable in strengthening TJF’s future research and dissemination efforts on sustainable food systems. They also open doors for potential co-authorship and collaborative research opportunities in the coming years.

Through the TropAg 2025 forum, we gained meaningful feedback for our ongoing research, marking an important step in our efforts to deepen our research, expand our partnerships, and contribute to a more sustainable agriculture and food system.
