In today’s world with 7.6 billion people, one-fourth of the population do not have regular access to healthy food and almost 1 billion people live in hunger. Meanwhile, over 2.5 billion consume too much, resulting in overweight and obesity. This triple burden of malnutrition challenges our vision to achieve food security which has four main pillars: availability, access, utilization, and stability. How can we approach this complex, intertwine issue?

<span style="font-size:11pt;font-family:Nunito,sans-serif;color:#000000;background-color:transparent;font-weight:700;font-style:normal;font-variant:normal;text-decoration:none;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre;white-space:pre-wrap;">16th October 2025<span style="font-size:11pt;font-family:Nunito,sans-serif;color:#000000;background-color:transparent;font-weight:400;font-style:normal;font-variant:normal;text-decoration:none;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre;white-space:pre-wrap;"> – Tay Juhana Foundation (TJF), in collaboration with Zentide and Greeneration Foundation (GF), hosted a webinar highlighting the importance of sustainable food security and circular economy, titled <span style="font-size:11pt;font-family:Nunito,sans-serif;color:#000000;background-color:transparent;font-weight:700;font-style:italic;font-variant:normal;text-decoration:none;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre;white-space:pre-wrap;">“From Earth to Earth: Food Security and Circular Economy for Future Generations.”<span style="font-size:11pt;font-family:Nunito,sans-serif;color:#000000;background-color:transparent;font-weight:400;font-style:normal;font-variant:normal;text-decoration:none;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre;white-space:pre-wrap;"> The event was successfully attended by 176 participants from various backgrounds, from students, practitioners, to governmental personnels.<span style="font-size:11pt;font-family:Nunito,sans-serif;color:#000000;background-color:transparent;font-weight:400;font-style:normal;font-variant:normal;text-decoration:none;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre;white-space:pre-wrap;">This webinar was held in accordance with the celebration of World Food Day 2025 under the theme <span style="font-size:11pt;font-family:Nunito,sans-serif;color:#000000;background-color:transparent;font-weight:400;font-style:italic;font-variant:normal;text-decoration:none;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre;white-space:pre-wrap;">“Hand in Hand for Better Foods and Better Future” <span style="font-size:11pt;font-family:Nunito,sans-serif;color:#000000;background-color:transparent;font-weight:400;font-style:normal;font-variant:normal;text-decoration:none;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre;white-space:pre-wrap;">where collaboration is recognized as a key factor towards a better and sustainable food future. This factor was also highlighted by the representatives of the three organizations in their opening remarks, soliciting the audience for a further collaboration on making an impactful change towards a sustainable food future through this opportunity. <span style="font-size:11pt;font-family:Nunito,sans-serif;color:#000000;background-color:transparent;font-weight:400;font-style:normal;font-variant:normal;text-decoration:none;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre;white-space:pre-wrap;">Further effort on this issue is urgently needed as we have to “increase the global food production by 60% in 2050 to fulfill the rising population’s needs” as Septi Mulyani Siregar, Zentide’s CEO Representative, quoted the FAO. Multilayered problems are also underlying the realization of food security by the year 2050 such as “82% of Indonesia’s land are reckoned to be suboptimal while optimal land for food is constantly decreasing with the rising land conversion. Other challenges also come from the aging farmers and the uncertainty of climate change” as Dinda Sonaloka, TJF’s Assistant Manager, stated. Moreover, the Operational Director of GF, Mika Agustina, also added that “it is the youths and environmentalists that foster the greatest role in ensuring change towards a sustainable future through ideas, innovations, and energy.” <span style="font-size:11pt;font-family:Nunito,sans-serif;color:#000000;background-color:transparent;font-weight:400;font-style:normal;font-variant:normal;text-decoration:none;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre;white-space:pre-wrap;">With the diverse focus of the three organizations, this webinar successfully covered three main topics, namely biosolution for a sustainable agriculture brought by Zentide, circular economy brought by GF, and, finally, sustainable food security by TJF. <span style="font-size:11pt;font-family:Nunito,sans-serif;color:#000000;background-color:transparent;font-weight:400;font-style:normal;font-variant:normal;text-decoration:none;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre;white-space:pre-wrap;">Opening the presentation session, <span style="font-size:11pt;font-family:Nunito,sans-serif;color:#000000;background-color:transparent;font-weight:700;font-style:normal;font-variant:normal;text-decoration:none;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre;white-space:pre-wrap;">Rijalul Umam<span style="font-size:11pt;font-family:Nunito,sans-serif;color:#000000;background-color:transparent;font-weight:400;font-style:normal;font-variant:normal;text-decoration:none;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre;white-space:pre-wrap;">, Agronomist and Sales Manager of Zentide, shared insights on biosolutions as a pathway toward sustainable agriculture. Highlighting the urgency of shifting away from chemical dependency, he explained how the excessive use of synthetic fertilizers, though initially meant to boost yields, has led to soil degradation, economic inefficiency for farmers, and worsening climate impacts. As a solution, Zentide is continuously developing and researching biosolutions to restore soil health. This is done through the development of natural biostimulants derived from tropical seaweed in Lombok, which can reduce chemical fertilizer use by up to 50%. By revitalizing soil ecosystems and improving nutrient absorption, these innovations not only enhance productivity but can also contribute to long-term food security. Through collaborations with local farmers, research institutions, and universities, Zentide envisions a farming ecosystem that sustains both people and the planet.<span style="font-size:11pt;font-family:Nunito,sans-serif;color:#000000;background-color:transparent;font-weight:400;font-style:normal;font-variant:normal;text-decoration:none;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre;white-space:pre-wrap;">Continuing the discussion, Greeneration Foundation, represented by their Communication and Partnership Manager, <span style="font-size:11pt;font-family:Nunito,sans-serif;color:#000000;background-color:transparent;font-weight:700;font-style:normal;font-variant:normal;text-decoration:none;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre;white-space:pre-wrap;">Fikli Perdana Kusuma<span style="font-size:11pt;font-family:Nunito,sans-serif;color:#000000;background-color:transparent;font-weight:400;font-style:normal;font-variant:normal;text-decoration:none;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre;white-space:pre-wrap;">, explored how the circular economy can serve as a transformative model for a sustainable future. Rather than adhering to the traditional linear “take-make-dispose” system, a circular economy emphasizes minimizing waste, maintaining the value of materials, and regenerating natural systems. Fikli outlined how this framework, now supported by Indonesia’s national roadmap for 2025–2035, can be applied across various sectors—from industry and business to communities and households. By promoting practices such as recycling, refill systems, and waste sorting, the circular economy not only reduces environmental burdens but also strengthens the foundations of food and resource security. Drawing from TJF’s research in Indragiri Hilir, Riau, where peat and tidal lands dominate, the team shared how locally adapted water management and agroforestry systems can strengthen resilience amid climate challenges. They introduced regenerative agriculture as an approach that prioritizes soil health, biodiversity, and ecological balance, while maintaining productivity and farmers’ welfare. By promoting diverse planting systems and integrating crops with livestock, practices like coconut-based agroforestry have proven to improve both ecosystem stability and livelihoods. Proper water management not only supports agricultural productivity but also preserves the ecological function of peatland as a carbon sink and biodiversity habitat.<h3>Challenges in Water Management in Peatland</h3>Peatland has unique hydrological characteristics, with high moisture levels and a great capacity to store water. These blocks help prevent excessive drying, which could trigger fires and soil degradation.<h4>2. Rewetting (Re-moistening of Peatland)</h4>Degraded peatland due to excessive drainage needs to undergo rewetting or re-moistening. Water Management Process in Peatland for Agriculture

Today, India has 377 million urban population (21% of Asia) who all expect high income, employment, and improved services and access to the cities. The country has 53 cities with more than a million population. The underlined issue in India’s urban area was land use and land cover change where the area for agriculture keeps decreasing over the years. Conversely, the population and built-up area are growing. It results in some concerns such as the growth of vehicle ownership, emission of SO2, NO2, and Suspended Particulate Matter (SPM), also the rising phenomenon of smog and urban heat island. In recent years, there was a change in the cropping pattern, particularly the decline in food grains production caused by industrial demand for other products and climate factors. Therefore, urban food production is expected to mitigate the challenge. To implement the practice sustainably, a tailor-made approach that considers local geography and knowledge, environment stewardship, and scientific technology. There is a reinforcing loop between resilient agriculture practice, food, and nutrition security, health and well-being, social inclusion and equity, also investment in both environmental and socio-economic capitals. The focus on urban food production with community inclusion is highlighted through four Es: Enable, Engage, Exemplify, and Encourage. Urban agriculture can involve animal husbandry, aquaculture, agroforestry, urban beekeeping, horticulture, and floriculture. These activities can be as well conducted in the peri-urban area, with women having a vital role as homemaker and cultivator. Nevertheless, there are different strength, weakness, opportunities, and threats (SWOT) which should be identified for specific urban or peri-urban area. The analysis will include water conservation for urban agriculture purpose. Wastewater reuse using the nanotechnology application is one way to provide the agricultural water demand. There is also a need to invest and improve resource productivity, for example, by applying cleaner processing and using more materials from recycling industry. LAND &#038; LIFE | Edisi #1: Masih adakah lahan di masa depan?

Peatlands, which cover approximately 7% of Indonesia’s land surface, hold significant agricultural potential but require careful management for sustainability. The objective of this research is to assess the effects of land and water management on peat soil bulk density (BD) and subsidence in agricultural practices employing integrated water management. The study was conducted in Pulau Burung District, Riau Province, which is the only Nucleus and Smallholder Estate Scheme of coconut plantation in Indonesia. Effects of Land and Water Management on Bulk Density of Peat Soils in Coconut Plantations

This study investigates the dynamics of nutrient cycling within closed-system peatland ecosystems, focusing on the role of nutrient leaching in enhancing biomass productivity. Conducted in a coconut plantation in Pulau Burung District, Indragiri Hilir Regency, Riau Province, the research quantitatively assesses the leaching of essential nutrients into a 10 cm layer of peat soil resulting from cover crop decomposition. Nutrient leaching analysis in cover crop management to enhance the nutrient cycling process in coconut plantations

Indonesia, progressing towards sustainable development, faces the complex task of transitioning to low-carbon agriculture in peatlands, an essential part of broader sustainable objectives. Under the Paris Agreement, it targets a conditional 41% emission reduction, focusing on minimizing emissions from peat decomposition and fires within agricultural practices in peatlands. This paper explores the complexities and progress of low-carbon agriculture in peatlands, underscoring its significance in the larger sustainable development agenda.
