Urban area promotes economic growth and satisfy people’s commercial needs, agricultural land provides food and fiber, forest supplies raw materials and is important habitats for wildlife. Managing these landscapes is necessary to enhance the sustainable use of natural resources.

When we think about food sources, vast rice fields, fertile farmland, or abundant oceans often come to mind. However, we often overlook wetlands, despite their crucial role in feeding billions of people worldwide. As dynamic ecosystems where land and water intersect, wetlands have long fascinated scientists and agricultural experts. These unique landscapes are not only biodiversity hotspots and natural carbon sinks but also hold immense potential for sustainable farming. Harnessing their fertility while overcoming environmental challenges requires innovation and collaboration.Wetlands, characterised by the intersection of aquatic and terrestrial environments, have long intrigued researchers and agricultural experts. Wetlands International states that these unique ecosystems offer considerable value, functioning as crucial biodiversity hotspots, natural carbon sinks, and fertile soils conducive to sustainable agricultural practices. The conversion of these fertile yet difficult conditions into productive agricultural systems requires creativity and cooperative efforts. Indonesia encompasses roughly 40.5 million hectares of wetlands, which constitutes about 20% of the nation’s overall land area. This makes wetlands, such as peatland and swampland, an important resource for improving national food security.Recognising this potential, the Tay Juhana Foundation (TJF) convened TJF Sharing Session (TSS) #1, with the theme Farming in Wetlands, on March 13, 2025. The event brought together farmers, researchers, and community leaders to explore the opportunities, best practices, and challenges of wetland-based farming. With the support of the Centre for International Forestry Research—World Agroforestry (CIFOR-ICRAF) in South Sumatra, Hermawan implemented zero-burning techniques, built  dams and canals for effective water management, and converted weeds and livestock waste into nutrient-rich compost.His dedication paid off; rice production surged from 2.3 to 5 tonnes per hectare. Kampung Gambut, located in North Pontianak, West Kalimantan, is a successful village with vast vegetable fields stretching as far as the eye can see. Farmers in this area view innovation and open communication as important to their success. The village’s transformation into a leading vegetable grower can be attributed in part to the leadership of local cooperative head Irwansyah, who has transformed the hamlet into a major crop provider.Farmers in Kampung Gambut learn from one another, adopting techniques such as using dolomite to regulate soil acidity.  They understand that collective effort, rather than reliance on outside help, drives progress. However, challenges remain. This topic is presented by Rabbirl Yarham Mahardika, who emphasises the extensive historical and scientific relevance of tropical peatlands. A study conducted by <a href="https://iopscience.iop.org/article/10.1088/1748-9326/abb853/pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Monika Ruwaimana et al. (2020) </a>highlights a significant contrast between the comparatively young coastal peatlands in Rasau Jaya and the centuries-old interior peatlands in Kapuas Hulu, with some dating back approximately 49,600 years.Beyond their geological significance, peatlands serve as vital habitats for endangered species and function as crucial carbon sinks. However, without proper water management and sustainable practices, these ecosystems face rapid degradation. Protecting peatlands is not just about conservation. It is a fundamental step toward strengthening climate resilience and securing food systems for future generations.Wetlands offer immense potential for agriculture, supporting rice, sago, and horticultural crops while providing a consistent water supply for aquaculture and biodiversity that enhances agroforestry and polyculture systems. The key takeaway from the TSS event was clear: sustainable wetland agriculture requires continuous  innovation, adaptation, and collaboration. Additionally, peatland supports biodiversity conservation, serving as a habitat for rare flora and fauna, including orangutans and Sumatran tigers.However, peatland’s natural characteristics classify it as suboptimal land, making it vulnerable to degradation. In the definition of suboptimal land, this type of soil presents challenges such as high acidity, low nutrient content, and difficult drainage. Everyone in this world has a right to access affordable and nutritious food. Unfortunately, many low and middle-income families are still struggling to achieve that level of prosperity. In Indonesian cities, the price ranges of several primary food ingredients is higher compared to cities in its neighboring countries such as Malaysia, Thailand and India. This high price results in lower food purchase and consumption of the people. This group of people will adapt their diets based on the food price. They will choose cheaper food for daily consumption which oftentimes made the nutrition balance overlooked and elevate the case of stunting, wasting, and underweight due to nutrition deficiency.

The problem of high food price is also challenging for the traders in traditional market. These traders are often blamed by people when the food price is rising, while in fact, they did not solely control the price. The weather pattern determines harvest yield and the logistic fee governs supply chain. Even financial service can affect food price. Farmers and market traders are not deemed as bankable so they often turn to loan sharks who charge high interest and lead to higher product price. Traditional market needs to be accommodated to have a closer and easier connection to the main suppliers and distributors of food commodities.

The risk of malnutrition also exists in rural and remote areas in Indonesia where the access and affordability of nutritious food are very limited. An initiative called Pencerah Nusantara focuses on optimizing local foods and educating local people about the nutritious foods so that there will be better healthcare service in the area. In practice, most of the facilitators empower local people to grow their own agriculture products.
For example, the initiative in Mentawai provided seed, fertilizer, and supervision to nurture the community gardens. In Lindu, Sigi, the facilitators assisted the people to farm ducks. The most notable impact of Pencerah Nusantara was recorded in Poto Tano, West Sumbawa, where the facilitator advocated the utilization of daun kelor for substitution of nutritious foods.

In general, there are present challenges the complicated issue of food supply chain in Indonesia results in the limited access and unaffordability of food that results in higher risk of stunting or other malnutrition related illnesses. A better set of policies could be on improving infrastructure for better food distribution, providing seed subsidy and agriculture modernization, to reducing import restrictions for commodities that cannot be fulfilled domestically.

Provisioning Affordable and Nutritious Food to Minimize the Risk of Malnutrition

Conventionally, agriculture in peatland requires soil drainage to enable the crops to grow. This often results in being over-drained and makes it vulnerable to fires. The risk can be contained by applying water management trinity (WMT), which creates canals for water regulation and reservoirs instead of drainage. This study aimed to examine, elaborate, and validate the WMT effect and community involvement in minimizing fire risk in peatland.We collected water table depth every two weeks from 1 April 2017 to 31 December 2020 in a coconut plantation under WMT and employed Focus Groups Discussions (FGD) in five villages in Pulau Burung District, Indragiri Hilir Regency, Riau. Alleviating peatland fire risk using water management trinity and community involvement

Catastrophic forest and land fires have turned a global spotlight on tropical peatlands in Indonesia. The consequent reformulation of Indonesian land-use policy has been complicated by the existence of two apparently opposing objectives, namely conservation and development. In many regions of the country, peatland agriculture is one of the pillars of development, but its sustainability is questioned.This article focuses on a coconut plantation managed by local stakeholders on peatland in Pulau Burung District (Riau Province) where excellent productivity has been achieved, promoting Indonesia as the world’s largest supplier of coconut.
