The findings emphasize the importance of strong social networks among farmers (bonding social capital) as a cornerstone for ecosystem sustainability. However, the study also highlights the need to broaden these networks to include external stakeholders (bridging and linking social capital) to address complex challenges and unlock new opportunities.This research aligns perfectly with the Tay Juhana Foundation’s mission to empower rural communities and promote sustainable agricultural practices. Strengthening social capital can create resilient and prosperous agricultural ecosystems. The insights gained from this study will inform our future initiatives and partnerships to support small-scale farmers and enhance the sustainability of coconut production in Indonesia.We are excited to share the results of this research with a wider audience and to collaborate with partners to translate these findings into actionable solutions. Tay Juhana Foundation Update: Social Capital and Coconut Sustainability

Manggala Wanabakti Auditorium, Ministry of Environment and Forestry,  Jakarta &#8211; Despite its pivotal role in the Earth system, tropical peatlands remain one of the least understood and least studied ecosystems in the world. It is also one of the most vulnerable due to the combined pressures from climate change to growing populations. The International Tropical Peatland Center (ITPC) is an international research center initiated by the governments of Indonesia, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Republic of the Congo and Peru. The center will act as a platform foster partnerships in conducting integrated research and development that is paramount to informing proper prioritization between countries and finding ways for peatland conservation, management and restoration to serve as a plausible aid to both.
Already, the soft-launching event of ITPC’s Interim Secretariat in Bogor managed to provide a platform to share the lessons learned in peatland policy and decision-making processes where it offers valuable opportunities for South-South cooperation.
The first session was led by the government representative of Indonesian and Republic of the Congo, United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and CIFOR which focused on the history of ITPC establishment and the fundamental of national forest policy for peatland. The following two sessions discussed on the lesson learned, opportunities and challenges of Indonesian best practices next to the international collaboration and experience of peatland management. The speakers came from different institutions from Peat Restoration Agency (BRG), Indonesia Forest Concession Holder Association (APHI), Norway Embassy, USAID, Food and Agriculture (FAO), also local NGO and farmer. All speakers emphasized the need to take an urgent action to address peatland challenges through partnership from conserving the area to ensuring the existence of sustainable livelihoods and rural development in the surrounding peat ecosystem.

Through this soft-launching event, the attendees obtained new knowledge and information in peatland management. The speakers shared the collaborative projects such as UNEP’s restoration program in Indonesia and Congo, BRG’s partnership with Kemitraan and NORAD of Desa Peduli Gambut, also FAO’s peatland farmer educational program. Furthermore, USAID pledged to allocate IDR 5 billion of their budget to build canal blocking and other infrastructures and to support the livelihood of 3000 small rubber farmers. Potential crops were also introduced to show that peatland can be cultivate sustainably and generate incomes. In general, the stakeholders need to understand the behaviour, the constraint, and the objectives of the community to shape a better regulation.

Soft-Launching of the Interim Secretariat of International Tropical Peatland Centre (ITPC)

Today, India has 377 million urban population (21% of Asia) who all expect high income, employment, and improved services and access to the cities. The country has 53 cities with more than a million population. The underlined issue in India’s urban area was land use and land cover change where the area for agriculture keeps decreasing over the years. Conversely, the population and built-up area are growing. It results in some concerns such as the growth of vehicle ownership, emission of SO2, NO2, and Suspended Particulate Matter (SPM), also the rising phenomenon of smog and urban heat island. These concerns have been proven to affect human health where the mortality rate due to chronic respiratory illness (e.g. pneumonia, influenza, asthma, and bronchitis) was increased since 2002.

India is known for its diverse agricultural crop products across varied environment. In recent years, there was a change in the cropping pattern, particularly the decline in food grains production caused by industrial demand for other products and climate factors. Therefore, urban food production is expected to mitigate the challenge. To implement the practice sustainably, a tailor-made approach that considers local geography and knowledge, environment stewardship, and scientific technology. There is a reinforcing loop between resilient agriculture practice, food, and nutrition security, health and well-being, social inclusion and equity, also investment in both environmental and socio-economic capitals. The focus on urban food production with community inclusion is highlighted through four Es: Enable, Engage, Exemplify, and Encourage.

Urban agriculture can involve animal husbandry, aquaculture, agroforestry, urban beekeeping, horticulture, and floriculture. These activities can be as well conducted in the peri-urban area, with women having a vital role as homemaker and cultivator. Nevertheless, there are different strength, weakness, opportunities, and threats (SWOT) which should be identified for specific urban or peri-urban area. The analysis will include water conservation for urban agriculture purpose. Wastewater reuse using the nanotechnology application is one way to provide the agricultural water demand. There is also a need to invest and improve resource productivity, for example, by applying cleaner processing and using more materials from recycling industry. By considering and utilizing these mentioned approaches, it is expected that enhanced urban agriculture can reduce the urban risk and improve livelihoods.

The Links between Health, Agriculture, and Sustainability of Urban-Rural Environment System in Indian Megacities

Most people may not know, but Jakarta, as the capital city of the country, has one the highest subsidence rate in the world. Land subsidence is essentially a natural phenomenon, but the negative impact of anthropogenic activity has accelerated the rate. Nationally, Indonesia is experiencing demographical bonus where population of younger age is more than the older one. In consequence, the country needs to provide more work opportunities and accommodate the new wave of young entrepreneurs which has trending lately and still has much potential. The growing population also contributes to faster urbanization rate. Java is currently home to many urban agglomerations such as Jabodetabekjur, Gerbangkertosusilo, and Sarbagita, and it is estimated to become an urban island in 2045. From the economic perspective, 1% in urbanization growth can contribute to 4% of GDP per capita increased.

The current issues of Jakarta extend from transportation, housing condition, drinking water access, and wastewater management, also land use change. In the currently high-mobility urban population within Jabodetabek, the public transportation system in the capital area are not yet sufficient. The Province of Jakarta scores high in all four sub-standard housing indicators. There are still many houses with inadequate roof/wall/floor condition, narrow living area, and limited access to improved drinking water and sanitation. The land-water interaction controls the issues of flooding, raw water limitation, river and bay pollution, also land limitation, in particular for practicing agriculture that provides food for the people. The urban growth in the bordering regions of Jakarta promotes land use change for built-up areas (e.g., settlements, offices, and industry). Consequently, less and less arable lands are available for producing crop and this adds pressure to the food system in the surrounding area.

The described situation above calls for a complex system of solution, not only to resolve the challenges but also to supervise the urban development to be kept sustainable. The National Development Planning Agency (BAPPENAS) works to formulate concepts, mostly for the infrastructure systems, that will be implemented in the nation. More importantly, the implementation of any measures will be aligned with the principal of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and NUA (New Urban Agenda) for cities those are liveable, competitive, green and resilient, also have local identities.

The State of Challenges of the Urban Development

In Demak Regency, abrasion and robs flood have adversely affected the farmers’ aquaculture ponds since the past decades. The changing coastal environment and lack of knowledge to adapt in aquaculture management led to declining production that hampered the community’s resilience in the future. To help the farmers to thrive, an initiative called Coastal Field School (CFS) was implemented in 10 villages in Demak.This paper discusses the CFS impact on the farmers’ knowledge change using the indicators of farmers’ program participation level, pre-test and post-test result to determine the knowledge improvement, aquaculture management technique, and productivity rate.This article is published in IOP Conf. Empowering Fish-Farmer through Coastal Field School: Towards Sustainable Aquaculture Practice

Future food production is expected to meet the capacity in providing food for 9.7 billion people in the world by 2050. As the population rises, the demand for rice cropping areas in Indonesia will double to approximately 16.5 million ha by 2040. Deploying arable land intensification alone would hardly fill the gap. In Indonesia, around 140,000 – 187,000 hectares of agricultural areas have been lost due to residential or industrial purposes every year, especially in Java Island. This research attempted to explore the viable farming method to improve rice production in peatland which has the potential to be cultivated as arable land.This article is published in IOP Conf. Lesson Learned from the Development of Sustainable Rice Farming in Peatland

Contrary to popular belief that perceived Indonesia has abundance of arable land, the soil types in this country are, in fact, dominated by suboptimal lands. In fact, these lands, including wetlands, can become an alternative to support food production and community welfare.Indonesia with its abundance of suboptimal land resources has been struggling to implement sustainable agriculture on inland swamps. If wetlands could be optimally developed, the nation’s target in producing 10 million tons of rice surplus would be achieved. This also can create five million new jobs for farmers.
